This book deals with the history of the Gurukula System starting from the Vedic period, and the modern institutionalized teaching system of carnatic music. The author has deeply analyzed the existing system of music education in the institutions especially at the university level with many suggestions for improvement.
Contribution of great gurus and musicians of carnatic music of 19/20 centuries with emphasis on their service for preserving and imparting the art from generation to generation with all its purity and authenticity and also their direct or indirect encouragement for establishing and developing the institutionalized system of teaching carnatic music.
Dr. T. Unnikrishnan hails from a musical family of Kerala. His mother Smt. T. Parukutty Amma initiated him into the beauty of music. Later he received advanced training in vocal music from Sri David Bhagavathar, Padamshree K.V. Narayana Swami, Vidwan B. Rajam Iyer, Shri T.M. Tyagarajan and Shri T. V. Gopalakrishnan. He has obtained Ganabhushanam & Sangeet Vidwan diplomas in Carnatic Vocal Music with merit. He is also a recipient of the National Scholarship of Govt. of India.
