About the Book

An Introduction to Meetei Mayek: Reading and Writing is a semi-auto instructional material for reading and writing Meetei Mayek, the script used in writing Meeteilon (Manipuri) language. The main objective of this book is to enable the Meeteilon language learners to read and write Meetei Mayek. The illustrations of individual Meetei Mayek letters with simplified hand movements will enable the learners how to write the script quite easily. It also provides spaces in the book itself to practice writing the letters. On the other hand, Roman equivalent sounds, phonetic values in IPA, phonetic descriptions of the individual letters are provided, which will enable the learner pronounce the letters appropriately. The exercises at the end of every lesson will help the learners test and evaluate themselves.

About the Author

Salam Brojen Singh was born at Samurou Village, Imphal, Manipur to S. Manaobi Singh and Mrs. Laishram Sakhi Devi. He has participated in many conferences and workshops. He has been associated with many reputed institutions like CDAC Pune, CDAC Hyderabad, CBSE and contributed academic resources on Manipuri language. At present, he is teaching in North Eastern Regional Language Centre, Guwahati.

Aleendra Brahma is a Lecturer-cum-Junior Research Officer at Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysuru. Presently, he is also the Officer-in- Charge of North Eastern Regional Language Centre, Guwahati, a Centre of the Institute. He has worked extensively on the Bodo and other NEI languages and linguistics. His arcas of interest include folklore, sci-fi, translation, lexicography, orthography, and Bodo literature.

Preface

The idea of bringing out the Script Book Series of Indian languages had been ruminated several decades back along with the primary objectives of Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysuru.

This is a semi-auto instructional introduction to reading and writing of Meetei Mayek. The main aim of this book is to impart knowledge about how to write the script and read them. To easily learn how to write, suitable hand movements with the help of necessary arrow marks are used. On the other hand, Roman and International Phonetic Alphabets are used to show the same, similar or closemost pronunciations of the Meetei Mayek letters.

The Meetei Mayek letters are designated on the basis of the different human body parts. Though the letters are traditionally arranged in such a way from the top to the lower body parts (of human), they are categorised on the bases of the similarities in their graphemic shapes and sizes in this book for convenience in learning how to write them. To develop the writing ability of the learners from easy to difficult levels, the letters in the groups and even the groups themselves are arranged from easy to difficult ones.

The traditionally followed hand movements in writing the individual letters, clusters and even numerals are given in this book to show the left to right or right to left, top to bottom or bottom to top and clockwise or anticlockwise movements in writing the standing lines, sleeping lines, slanting lines, and curvy lines in the letters and numerals. These are followed by writing practices and exercises. Then, a good number of groups of monosyllabic and bisyllabic words are taken together in the reading and writing practices to enhance the writing and reading abilities along with the introduction to simple lexical items.

The learners can comfortably use pencils to practice writing in the pages of the book itself without the use of any extra sheets or copies, so that they can erase and rewrite the letters, the numerals, and the words to practice

more than once. This script book is designed especially for the L2 learners in RLCs under CIIL. However, any first language learners can also use this book to learn writing and reading the Manipuri language.

Foreword

The Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) was established on July 17, 1969 by the Government of India in Mysuru to help in evolving and implementing the language policy of the Government and to coordinate the development of Indian languages by conducting research in the areas of language analysis, language pedagogy, language technology and language use in the society. The Institute is also entrusted with the responsibility of assisting and improving the teaching of Indian languages at various levels by developing new methods, models, and materials and by making use of modern technology.

It began its journey with several units of research such as Tribal and Border Languages, Sociolinguistics, Phonetics, Psycholinguistics, Material Production and Training, Testing and Evaluation, Educational Technology, Lexicography and Translation, Cartography, Folklore, Computer Applications and so on. In addition to this, seven Regional Language Centres (RLC) were set up at Mysuru, Patiala, Bhubaneswar, Pune, Lucknow, Solan, and Guwahati with a goal of implementing the three- language formula and thereby contributing to national integration. These Centres offer Diploma in Language Education (DLE) courses in second languages and teach 20 Indian scheduled languages to non-native speakers mainly to in service teachers, prospective teachers, research scholars, and general public. CIIL was one of the few institutions that initiated work on natural language processing in the early 1990s. It has interdisciplinary academic collaborations with various institutions at both national and international levels. The Institute is well-recognised by the academic fraternity across the globe for the quality of its wide-ranging linguistic research and language studies.
