Azhar Seikh, did his Master's in Social Work (MSW) from Maharashtra. He is at present working as an associate professor in NANDED. He was awarded Ph.D. in Social Work.

Dr. Seikh is a well-known authority on Islamic Culture. He regularly writes on modern Islam. He has published many books on Social Welfare and Islam.

Dr. Seikh has widely travelled in India and has visited Ajmer, Rampur, Deoband, Jammu and Kashmir, Hyderabad and Aurangabad in India.

Dr. Seikh is associated with many governmental Committees on minorities and he advises social welfare departments of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Islam is facing militancy in the world of today. There are sharp divisions in the Muslim societies. There are groups who are in favour of implementation of Islamic laws very strictly. There are groups in societies who are influenced by Western Culture and are in favour of changes in Islamic way. This book focuses on this aspect of Islam.

The Muslim world of late has been witnessing what at first sight appears as the 'revival of militant Islam' and the assertion of "Islamic fundamentalism", The overthrow of monarchy and the emergence of aggressive leadership of Ayatullah Khomeini in Iran, Zia-ul-Haq's pledge of establishing Nizam-e-Mustafa and the world-wide condemnation by the Muslims of the attack on Kaaba Mosque, etc., are cited by journalists and commentators as examples of Islamic solidarity and spiritual unity which signify 'the Return of Islam", "New Wave of Islam', 'Islamic Revolution', 'Islamic self-assertion', 'resurgence of Islamic traditions', 'Islamic search for identity' and what not.

None of these descriptions refer to the basic political question of the economic realities of the Muslim world and the relations between the communities within the State. If the Muslims happen to be the majority community what ought to be their relation to the rest of the community? Or, if they are in a minority, what should be their relation to the majority? Ignoring this basic problem, an attempt is being made to interpret the life of a people wholly from the standpoint of religion.
