The present work aims at providing a standard book on the history of Islam to the students and general readers. I Have sought to present in the book, in a small compass, a comprehensive and true picture of the lives of our great predecessors, the early Muslims.
A good account has been given of the pre-Islamic Arabia, particularly of the Jahiliyah, to illustrate the mighty revolution brought by the Prophet in the spiritual, social and the political life of the people. Aclear and correct estimate has been made of the career, teaching and achievements of the Prophet and the ideals of Islam in different spheres of Life. The works, ideals and achievements of the Pious Khalifas have been fairly appreciated and the lessons thereof have been sought to be presented before the students and the general readers.
In order to understand Islam, its greatness and achievements in their true perspective, the study of the history of Islam is of paramount importance to the Muslims in general and the students in particular. But there is dearth of a standard history of Islam for the students and general readers.
History is the mirror of the people. It is through this mirror of history that they see themselves and the performances of their great predecessors of the past. This mirror must be a true and perfect one. Otherwise, it will not give a true picture of their past and they will not recognise themselves.
The job of a historian is a responsible one. He is to provide a true mirror to the people. He must not be sentimental and should not have any other feeling except the love for truth. If history is presented in this light, then the people will have a real picture of themselves. The present work aims at providing a standard book on the history of Islam to the students and general readers. The Umayyad Khalifas have been portrayed in their true light and their works and achievements, particularly in the building of the Muslim Empire, have been systematically and clearly estimated.
