Introduction An exhaustive and critical study of the Pall Jatakas of the Sutiopijaka and the Sanskrit Jatakas of Aryadora's Jatakamála, undertaken by Dr. Anju Bala, is surely a fulfilling and satisfying task. The credit for this certainly goes to her, but undoubtedly to her distinguished and scholarly research-guide and guru, Dr. Sushma Kulshreshtha, M.A., Acharya, D. Phil., D. Litt., who has endeavored along with Anju to make this presentation what it has come out to be Ms. Anju Bala has certainly made her undertaking a good and successful job. It is true that the Pall Jatakas have been studied in the past by quite a few scholars from different points of view. A few years ago. Km. Ratna Vasu of the Department of Sanskrit, Calcutta University produced a very good work on these Jatakas. The Sanskrit Jatakas of Aryadura have attracted comparatively fewer scholars. One of them, Dr. K.K. Mishra, Ex.Director, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, New Delhi, did his Ph.D. on the Jatakamala of Aryadura and published his work a few years ago. But a comparative study of the 30 and more Sanskrit Jarakas of Kavyamala with the Pall Jatakas of the Suttapijaka had so far not been attempted in right earnest. This has now been done successfully by the author of the present work. The distinguishing features of the Sanskrit Jatakas, introduced or brought about in their fabric by the keen poetic sense of their author, had not been studied so far in the way and the manner in which they have been done in the present work. The excellence of Aryasura's diction and the elegance of his simple yet majestic style have also drawn full attention of the author, so that their treatment in the present work is also much better and fuller than hitherto.

To substantiate the point, reference may be made to Sibi, Unmadayanti, Suparaga or any other Jataka.
