For many years theological education has been done within the well-protected campus with the primary objective of training pastors. Theological Education by Extension (TEE) is an attempt to do theology beyond campus. The vision of TEE is not confined to ministerial training programme of the churches alone; rather is involves equipping the whole people of God; it is for the Laos the whole people of God. It seeks to empower the whole people of God for formation and transformation of the whole community and search to build a just and inclusive community in the context of the people of other faiths and to all people. Thus, the theological education by extension programme is meant to strengthen building an inclusive community. Those who go through the process of such education will be able to work not only "for" the people, but also "together with the people."
To aid external candidates in their studies, the production of study materials was under consideration for long time. We are happy that the resource materials are ready and I am sure this will greatly benefit the BD/BCS candidates especially those who do not have access to library facility. We record our appreciation to Rev. Dr. Tunchapbo SP, Faculty of New Testament at Calcutta Bible Seminary, Kolkata, for preparing study materials on Jesus Tradition in Paul and Pauline Circle. We thank EMW, Germany, for journeying with us in strengthening theological education and making the resources available for the production of study materials.
It was a delightful experience reading the manuscript of the book. Jesus Tradition in Paul and Pauline Circle, written by Tunchapbo, a faculty of New Testament of the Calcutta Bible Seminary, Senate of Serampore College (University) and an upcoming New Testament scholar. I could see in this writing a pattern of thought and a style of systematic writing. I could read each chapter and thereby could discover his scholarship in between the lines of the chapters. And to my paramount pleasure I could find the presentation so soothing and scholarly.
The book, Jesus Tradition in Paul and Pauline Circle, has done justice to its title. I consider it is a valuable new addition in the study of the New Testament. Any honest reader of this book would discover from the content of the book that the author had been keen to present readymade materials for the syllabuses of Bachelor of Divinity (BD) and Bachelor of Christian Studies (BCS) degrees as prescribed by the Senate of Serampore College (University). The book has dealt each topic quite elaborately as per the requirement of the syllabus.
In the first chapter the author focuses on different sources, including Apocryphal documents, for the study of the Pauline Tradition. This has led him to unfold the diverse worlds that have shaped Paul's thoughts and theologies, which appear in the second chapter. Paul's life and work covers the whole of third chapter, which unfolds Paul's chronology of life beginning from "conversion" to his missionary strategies, and thereafter his self- assessment and contextuality of Paul. The fourth chapter makes a survey of select New Testament scholars who have made "the Old and New" perspectives on Paul. This initiated the discussion on Jesus Movement in Paul. The outcome of Jesus Movement appears in the fifth chapter in the form of understanding of different Christian expressions and theologies, e.g., Christology, Soteriology, Eschatology, etc. This chapter has also taken care of the Pauline use of the Scriptures. The book ends dealing with some contemporary issues and explores the relevance of the Pauline teaching today.
The author has consulted a wide range of sources and was able to establish his thoughts in a very qualitative manner. Such method of assimilating knowledge from diverse sources and utilizing them for creative purpose is, no doubt, a virtue, which the author displayed even when he began his theological journey way back at the Eastern Theological College (Assam), and got shaped in Aizawl Theological College (Mizoram). The maturity that he has attained during this period of time through his research and teaching at the Calcutta Bible Seminary (Kolkata, West Bengal) is laudable. Readers at various levels would find this book worth possessing and referring to.
