Till a few years ago, there was a general impression that North East India is an isolated region of the country. But due to the tremendous efforts of the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi and his Act East policy the gap in distance and mind is fast decreasing through implementation of various development schemes and promotional campaign.
In continuation of its pursuits and objectives to promote, preserve and conserve the rich knowledge source, the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts felt the need to bring out a publication that would share the experiences and life stories of achievements of the unknown and lesser known people from Northeast India who have achieved excellence in different fields viz, art and culture, film, social work, sports, science and entrepreneurship among others, through a well researched documentation for a Coffee Table Book appropriately entitled "Jewels of Northeast India".
This book is an effort to bring out a colourful and picturesque publication based on individual interviews and interactions with sixty four personalities to make the study meaningful and qualitative. It aims to highlight the objectives of "Ek Bharat-Shreshtha Bharat", and acts as a catalyst in cultivating an understanding among the people of India. The Jewels of North East is a collection of a well researched biography with dedicated chapters on personalities of the eight states of North East India including Sikkim. These stories are straight from the heart and give the first hand information on the aspirations, struggle, dedication and success of the achievers.
This collection is only a representative one giving an idea of the rich intellectual, cultural wealth the North East India has. It is not possible to include all such persons in one collection. But looking at the response we would be bringing out few more such collection.
I appreciate the effort and dedication in preparing of this publication. The documentation and dissemination of people's lives shall be helpful in providing a much needed insight for generating information and knowledge about North East among the people of India as a whole.
I thank all the contributors', research team, IGNCA North East Regional Centre Guwahati ;and all those who have worked individually and collectively to bring out this invaluable work in its present form.
