Josh Malsiyani (1882-1976) was a disciple of Mirza Dagh Dehlvi. Josh had an organised mind, trained by tradition, nourished by individual effort, disciplined by practice and mellowed by conviction. He wrote at a time when India was passing through a phase of political, cultural and literary transition. Josh Malsiyani's poetry exhibits a tone that is assertive, familiar and straightforward. His poetic career is marked by a sustained progression of poetic thought and expression characterised by rare precision, poetic skill, satirical modes and keen contemporary awareness. Josh Malsiyani's poetry is the poetry of commitment- not to any ideology but to the values of ethical instruction and wisdom.
