Book Description
Editorial

Though a mite late In the season, we bring to you the third issue of the Journal of Indian Ocean Archaeology. This issue introduces an Editorial Board to advise and support the journal. The Editorial Board replaces the Associates of the Journal.

There is a new section called 'Archaeological Sites on the Indian Ocean Rim: A Growing Database. This space will allow the integration of first hand information on recent fieldwork along the Indian Ocean Rim. There are three articles on the east African coast. Felix Chami writes on his new excavations at Kuumbi Cave site, Zanzibar. Christian Isendahl builds an archaeo historical perspective on northern Mozambique on the basis of his fieldwork at Angoche Bay. Amitava Chowdhury writes on the archaeology of a fugitive slave site in Mauritius. Herman Kiriama and Ebrahim Busolo give their report on salvage operations at Watamu Mosque, Kenya.

Coming to India we have the report by Vishwas Gogte and his associates on the excavations of ancient port-sites of Chaul and Dhanau on the west coast of India. There are also observations of Sundaresh Gaur and his associates on the marine heritage of Gujarat and Goa. Raj Somadeva and his colleagues provide a detailed report on their fieldwork at the prehistoric site of Galpaya in Sri Lanka. Sunil Gupta reconstructs the long distance maritime routes connecting the Indian Ocean with eastern India and southern China in the early centuries CE. Pranab Jyoti Sarma presents a detailed report on the Indian component of the ancient routes to China. Sergey Lapteff reports on the evidence of glass and stone beads in Iron Age contexts in Cambodia. Alessandra Avanzini contributes to the Indian Ocean database by her brief on the excavations of the ancient port-site of Sumhuram/Khor Rori site on the southern Oman coast. She has also contributed the beautiful pictures of the Sumhuram / Khor Rori which grace the cover of this issue. We are thankful to her.

We thank the design team at VAP for their quick and efficient work. Our editorial assistant, Pranab Jyoti Sarma has put in hard work on the computer. He deserves our heartfelt thanks. All illustrations, maps and photographs are acknowledged at the end of the aricle and not below the figures and photographs. A number of authors have contributed to our column 'Notes and News' which embodies short reports on their field-work. We hope that this issue advances the idea of the early Indian Ocean world and encourages more contributions.
