Whilst on the subject of death, the words of Lord Krishna to his protégé and disciple Arjun on the battlefield of Kurukshetra are very pertinent.
"Anyone who is born is someday going to die and anyone who dies, his birth is inevitable. So why are you mourning the death of your brethren?"
The cycle of birth and death continues unabated till one achieves liberation. Rebirth and the law of Karma forms the crux and foundation of Hindu Philosophy and culture. I am a scientist at heart and subservient to scientific thought. It's therefore natural that I verify this premise from a scientific perspective. Physics has a very similar fundamental principle expressed a bit differently. The law of conservation which states- 'You cannot create or destroy anything. Only transformation from one state to another is possible. This law was proved with different equations and experiments particularly in the context of energy. The question then arises- What happens at the time of death? Which aspect of this multi layered, complex human body ends? Is anything destroyed or is it merely a transformation?
We believe that death is of the physical form or the gross body. The subtle body (sookshmasharir) as well as the causal body (kaaransharir) are indestructible. The subtle body when liberated at best settles in the causal body (kaaransharir) and can only merge into eternity (mahakaaran).
In the course of several talks, interactions and discussions that I had with my mentor and guide, the late Dr. Sureshchandra Nadkarni, we would deliberate on the occult sciences, extra sensory perception and other related metaphysical phenomenon. In 2001, we happened to be discussing the book "Premamayee" authored by the late Mr. V. P. Kale, who was more affectionately known as Vapu. He was a very dear friend of Dr. Nadkarni. The book contained a poem by the late V. V. Patankar and it touched a chord in my heart.
