I, Visti Larsen, born to Kaj and Maymuna Larsen on November 21st 1981 and 6 AM in Nairobi, Kenya.Grandson of Christian and Agathe Larsen as well as Ali and Fakir El-kindi, in tribute to my Guru Pt. Sanjay Rath and the lineage of Sri Acyuta Dasa of Orissa, hereby present this book to the world as a fruit of my learning.
I hope with the publication of this book, the tradition of astrology will be recognized by the astrology-community, as well as society at large, for the traditions depth, understanding and intellectual approach.
PUBLICATION
This publication is the result of a promise to my teacher, namely to teach on to others, what I have learned. The book is a contribution to the aspiring astrologers, with knowledge gained both from my personal association with my Guru, and the application of the same knowledge in my own experiences with my clientele.
The book is meant to lift astrologers of a beginner or intermediate level up to an advanced level. To work on the core roots of the subject, the first chapter deals with the ‘Panca-anga’, or the five limbs of the Vedic calendar. This particular area of Jyotish is often overlooked due to lack of knowledge in application on part of the astrologer, and also the idea that it is merely a calendar system, and hence overlooked completely by astrologers following the Western Astrology System. To give a more practical use of the pancanga, I have introduced some very useful methods of application to identify flaws in the quality of time, and how it relates to the chart.
Suffice to say, that this is ‘only the tip of the iceberg’, and the melting of this ice would lead to a flood of crystal clear and beautiful understanding of the entirety of the use of pancanga. This chapter may seem difficult for beginners, and I do recommend students to give themselves adequate time to understand this, and often go back and re-read this chapter. This chapter is however given first, as this is the first thing that an astrologer is taught to see before analyzing the chart… the reader will appreciate why, after reading it.
The subsequent chapters deal with more commonly known concepts, such as Grahas, Rasis, Bhavas, karakas, etc. however to avoid a repetition of already available literature, I have added a deeper understanding to aspects of the topic which are lesser known, such as Marana karaka Sthana, Bhava and Graha tithes, use of day/night births, planetary castes and the varnada lagna, upagrahas – just to mention the topics in the chapter on grahas. In a similar vein, I have given some deeper understanding and new “tips” on the use of the rasis as well as the bhavas, and a particularly important topic, namely sambandha or relationship. This being the relationships between planets, and the effect of these relationships in giving results. Two topics which are very close to heart among the members of Sri Jagannath Centre are Arudhas and Karakas. I have devoted a chapter to each in an attempt to establish a stronger foundation for the use of these techniques, and also an idea of their importance. In fact the entire book deals very strongly with the use of the Arudhas.
Four chapters are devoted to the twelve bhavas. Each bhava has been picked up and with it some extremely practical and repeatable techniques are shown which are not mentioned in the modern Jyotish books.
The last chapter is devoted to the Narayana Dasa which is the hall mark of the Jaimini Sutras, and one of my personal favorites. It should however, not be assumed that this dasa system is the only one used in this parampara. In fact Pt. Jagannath Rath, who was the grandfather of Pt. Sanjay Rath, was fond of Vimsottari Dasa, which he used down to a precision of 6 sublevels in his predictions! Yet, he used to calculate Narayana Dasa mentally to confirm the same. These dasa systems are but a few of the many dasa systems learnt in the parampara, but to begin with giving the aspiring astrologers a sidestep from the more commonly used vimsottari dasa (or the Astottari dasa used in eastern India), I have given some practical use of Narayana dasa.
Back of the Book
Visti Larsen’s journey of the occult began with Western Astrology in 1998, and moved on to jyotisa or Vedic Astrology in the year 2000. He joined Sri Jagannath Centre in 2001 to learn astrology as taught in the lineage of Sri Achyuta Dasa of Puri, Orissa and at his guru’s request became a jyotish guru and began teaching in 2002.
Since then, he has spent most of his time traveling with his guru, Sanjay Rath, to conferences in the USA, UK and India. He has been learning directly from his teacher during this time, which has become the seed for this publication.
Visti writes regularly for The Jyotish Digest, and received an award for the Best Presentation for his paper “Timing Career Events” at SJC’s 4th Annual Conference in Mumbai, 2005. He is an active member on various e-lists and is a teacher with SJCERC, SJC’s graduate and post-graduate programme. Visti is also deeply interested in spirituality and occult practices. Jyotish Fundamentals – my master’s worlds is Visti’s first book.
