Introduction

This small monograph by Sri. P. V. Parabrahma Sastry, Deputy Director (Epigraphy) of the Department of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Andhra Pradesh, on "Kakatlya Coins and Measures" is an exceedingly interesting and thought-provoking one.

For the first time, the author, who is a distinguished epigraphist, has sought to identify the several gold and other coins which have been discovered in the past, with inscriptions like "Raya Gaja Kesari" and "Daya Gaja Kësari" with Kakatiya coins. He has based his arguments mainly on the seal of the Khandavalli Copper Plate grant which bears the inscription "Daya Gaja Kesari" in clear letters. The author attributes the grant of this plate to Prataparudra of the Käkatiya dynasty and hence argues that the title "Daya Gaja Kesari" belongs to him. There may be some doubt about this, but the various stone and other epigraphs, quoted by the author, and specially the Terala inscription quoted by him leave no doubt, that Kumara Rudradeva Maharaja i.e. Prataparudra did have the title Daya Gaja Kesari. In view of this, the conclusion of the author, that the coins having the legends "Raya Gaja Kesari" and "Daya Gaja Kesari" should be attributed to the Kakatiyas, carries great weight indeed.
