This book represents one more piece of Research work done under my guidance in the years 1964-1968, in the Department of Sanskrit, University of Madras and being brought out in a special series by Messrs. Meharchand Lachhmandas, Delhi, the two former publications in this series being the Alamkaratarvasva and the Camatkaracandrika. It carries forward the work done in 1917 by Dr. Hari Chand Shastri which, during half a century that spacing had past, none had come forward to supplement and bring up-to-date. The present work takes account of the large number of sources, rare works since discovered or printed, which contain Kalidasa citations.
The citations in anthologies are evidence of the naturally widespread enjoyment of the great poet; those in works of poetics and dramaturgy show the points for which indigenous critics appreciated particular verses and contexts in his works; and those in works of grammar have linguistic significance.
Apart from the systematic tabular presentation of the citations, the author has some critical essays in which the results of this collection of citations for textual study of Kalidasa on some of the moot questions-the longer recension of the sakuntakt, the Apabhramsa and Prakrit verses of Act IV of the Vikramorvasiya in some mss., the later cantos of the Kumarasambhava and variants and additional passages and verses-have been discussed. The conception of rasabhasa, arising out of a Kalidasa-verse and its citation by Alamkara-writers and its discussion are of interest to students of Alamkara Sastra. The book, which is an extension of Kalidasa-appreciation, will, I am sure, be welcomed by all students of Kalidasa.
