Karnaataka sangeetha Dharpana Parts 1-4, in Kannada are well received by Kannada knowing music lovers. The first three parts have appeared in more than three editions. Fourth book is to be reprinted. These books contain both theory and practicals of Karnaaaka music designed to cater the need of the students appearing for different music examinations. They are systematically written to educate the students. Many expressed their opinion to have the same kind of books in English to cater to the needs of non Kannada students. This book in an attempt to meet the requirements of the Junior grade students appearing for the examination in Karnataka music conducted by the Department of Public Instruction (Secondary education board), Government of Karnaataka, Bangalore and also to educate the beginners in general.

Music is a progressive art. At the same time it is comprehensive and is maintaining its tradition. Sage Vidhyaaranya, who helped to establish the Karnaataka Empire during Fourteenth century is also the founder of Karnaata music. It is rich in its tradition with subtle aspects of music. Importance is given to compositional forms with a wide range of variety, both quantitatively and qualitatively. The structure of thaalas are well established through compositions. Emotional aspects of these forms are exquisite. The compositions are in south Indian languages and Sanskrit. A minimum knowledge of these languages is essential for the emotional presentation of the music. It is even possible to learn the languages through these compositions by understanding their meaning.
