Introduction

Identity of the Language:

Linguistically the Rabha belongs to the Bodo sub-group under the Assam-Burmese group of the Tibeto- Burman stock. It appears to be more akin to the Garo in general and the Ruga and the Atong (two dialects under the sub-types of Garo A) in particular than any other languages of this stock. But from the point of ethnic affinities they resemble the characteristics of the Mongoloid race, which was priorly known as 'Kirata' i.e. the Indo- Mongoloids. At present they are inhabiting in the adjacent area of Assam and Meghalaya (particularly in Goalpara and Kamrup districts of Assam and East and West Garo Hills districts of Meghalaya) in large numbers and are also scattered in some pockets of other districts of Assam, West Bengal as well as in Nepal and in Bangladesh in small numbers. According to the census report of 1991, the population of the Rabhas in Assam has been recorded as 2,31,202 persons. But other sources like the investigation report by the native organisations claim that their up-to-date population would not be less than five lakhs.
