About the Author

The author, Dr Shanker Adawal, is a senior management professional working with an Energy Major. He has done his MBA, PhD and thereafter worked in various assignments in India and abroad. He also has keen interest in Human Rights.

He got interested in astrology from his early years and went on to do his Jyotishacharya. He has been pursuing research in this field for more than 30 years.

All his previous books have been on various technical issues with regard to planets, profession, finance, marriage, predictive techniques and remedies.

Among charms we find gems, jewels, coins, vases, goblets, stones, weapons, herbs, trees, skulls, bones, buildings, animals, water, human beings; there is also that large section called spells where the charm consists of a formula of words or written characters often the object and formula being used in conjunction which are known as talismans.

They may also be classed as individual, family, tribal and national. Classification of charms is a difficult matter for the forces at work though sometimes distinct will often unite and work in conjunction. There are many forms of words and designs by means of which certain occult results are supposed to be achieved, these are usually called spells.

The book covers the matter related to charms, talismans and spells in length. It also tries to tell every aspect related to this subject. We have associated the subject with Astrology so that the readers could achieve more through it.

Preface

Man is a social animal. From times immemorial he is in search of peace and prosperity. Lucky are the persons who find the real objectives and purpose of life. They are kind, generous, humane, helpful to others, attached and leaned towards God to whatever religion they belong. They do meditation and attain their goal with the help of competent preceptor. Thus the persons who think and act attain the object and who never think lag behind then hard work, sincere meditation (means or practise to attain the desired end) in the correct manner way leads to success. Those who cannot perform meditation but still want to lead good and prosperous life, for this purpose our ancient seers and religious guides of all religions have demarcated some definite and well trusted way to attain the final goal of life and prosperity. The ways and means could be in various shapes provided they go well with the need of the person.

Every force in nature is expressible by a formula or similitude by the operation and expression of which it may be aroused to action. Many waste their lives in unscrupulous actions. Great are the persons who have been blessed with His grace. People at large do not understand the real purpose of their life. What they have to do in this world? They remain absorbed in this material world and there is little difference between such people and animals.

The concept of luck, or having things go in one’s favor is a much sought after experience. Even those who claim not to be superstitious will bend over to pick up a "Lucky penny" as they feel their day will be better on account of it. The act of carrying a lucky charm or talisman has been part of many cultures throughout history. Charms and Talismans serve two purposes: first to attract good luck and secondly to ward off evil.

Every one who has the least romance in his soul is interested in charms, though few of the present age have ever troubled themselves to look into their origin and history. To openly declare one’s belief in such things, whether it is in any form of ordinary charm, a gem or a jewel is to lay oneself open to ridicule, to say this least. To rise to superstition is progress and enlightenment. Every normal human being has this faculty of romance either latent or active; and if this book can in some measure fructify or strengthen that faculty in its readers then the authors will asumed that they have done good work.

The Hindus and the Persians call them charms, talismans; the latter also HAMALETE. The Bomans called them amulets (amuleta), the Mesopotamians teraphim, the Basilians abraxas, and the Oreeks phylacteria or—stdicheja’. The Egyptians and the ancient Hebrews also totapboth, and the Chaldees (seruche) tebhulim. The shapes and inscriptions varied with the different nations and religions, also with the taste of the wearer; but the belief in their efficacy for warding off evil spirit and for breaking their spell was common to all nations.

It is generally believed that gems, semi—precious stones charms, talisman and spells have a powerful effect on one’s life. Their influence can be utilized for one’s good and success. The Egyptians, being great believers in astrology, were accustomed lo have an engraving of one of the signs of the Zodiac on some gem which was mounted as a ring. The Romans favoured engravings of certain gods and goddesses; Venus engraved on onyx was supposed to impart strength and beauty and so on.

Although science has defeated superstition on many levels, I can’t help but pick up the penny lying in the street or smile when we come across a four-leaf clover. In modern times, many lucky charms and talismans have been adopted and utilized. Here the question will naturally arise that whether the belief in the power of charms is all but imagination. To this I will emphatically say, NO, and it has been my endeavour to show in the following pages the reason and logic of the power claimed for these things.

In writing this work it has to substatiate the arguments. Many references have been taken from various authors, both ancient as well as modern and to these I acknowledge my indebtedness.

My gratitude and thanks to my mother, Dr. Krishna Saksena who herself is an author in English Literature and a great devotee of Ma Durga. Her divine visions and inputs have been incorporated in this book.

My wife Renu and daughter Vrinda inspite of all kind of resource constrains have motivated me to continue working in this field as they call it as my greatest stress buster for motivation. Narender Sagar has been a great inspiration to me and he spends hours in planning and ensuring the best. My special thanks to him. Also thanks to my sister Tanya Gupta who is doing research at Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan for her critical inputs. My thanks are also to Sh. L.K. Vashishth for his valuable inputs for the book.

I dedicate this book to my father Late Kailash Chandra Saksena for whom astrology was like a religion and he pursued it passionately despite being a senior bureaucrat. I will use the next few month in developing a compilation, from all classics, for various streams of astrology, and present them with views in a structured format for the readers of this science. Narender Sagar has agreed to take up the project; this was my fathers' wish.

I would like to thank my readers for subscribing to our work and hope that this will go a long way in establishing common man’s faith in charms, talismans or spells which were practised by our ancestors. I would look forward to your valuable suggestions, which I would certainly try to incorporate in my forthcoming works.

I would like to end this with the thought of Vrindawan and Shri Banke Bihari whose blessings have been with me and always look upon him in all my endeavors.
