Kulwant Singh Virk was born in village Phuleran (District Shekhupura) in March, 1921. Around Phuleran, there were about 125 villages of the Virk community belonging to a single ancestor. That is why Kulwant Singh took a lot of pride in belonging to the 'Virk brotherhood'.

He worked at the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana and finally retired as the Press Secretary to the Chief Minister of Punjab.
Many brilliant stories, with village environment in the backdrop, tragic and dreadful torment of the Partition and the tales of the mental tensions of the people from the villages who settled in the cities, have been penned by Virk. He has published seven anthologies of stories.
