Kumarapala pratibodha written by Somaprabhacarya in 1195 A.D. deals with basic tenets and practical teachings of Jainism as imparted by the celebrated Jain preceptor Hemacandracarya to Kumarapala, the Chaulukya king of Gujarat. First published in 1920 A.D. and out of print for the last several years, this compendium of Jain religious principles was in great demand which proves its popularity and usefulness among the scholars and students of Jainism in particular and common readers interested in religious and philosophical studies in general.
I have the pleasure of placing this second edition of Kumarapalapratibodha of Somaprabhacharya in the hands of scholars, which was out of stock for a long time. It was first edited by Muni Shri Jinavijayaji and published in 1920. It contains the teachings of Jainism imparted by the illustrious Jain preceptor Hemachandracharya to Kumarapala, the Chaulukya king of Gujarat. It is composed by Somaprabhacharya, a well-known Jain scholar in Vikram Samvat 1241 i.e. 1195 A.D. only eleven years after the death of King Kumarapala. This Prakrit text is based on the single palm-leaf manuscript preserved in the Jain Bhandar of Patan written in Cambay in Vikram Sam. 1458 i.e. 1402 A.D. I am grateful to Gujarat Sahitya Akademi for financial assistance toward the reprinting of this important work. My thanks are also due to the University Authorities for sanctioning the matching share for the same. I express my sense of gratitude to Shri P. N. Shrivastav, Manager, M.S. University Press and his colleagues for reprinting the work expeditiously.
