Many have labelled him a 'failure' in politics and one who could not reach the dizzying heights of success. Unfortunately, these are those who measure success only in terms of materialistic gain or political designation. In an age consumed by greed for wealth and power, it is important to understand that Jayaprakash Narayan was a so called 'failure' by choice. Throughout his life, he did not crave for power or money. He fought for the rights of the people selflessly, without expecting any return. He withstood the inhuman torture of the British administration to ensure that his country got freedom. He steered politics and advised the politicians, but abstained from joining active politics. He could easily have become the prime minister when people voted out the Congress party in 1977, but suggested Morarji Desai's name. Again, he could have accepted Jawaharlal Nehru's invitation to join the Congress and lead a life of luxury. He did not. Instead, he criticized the Congress party for its dictatorial attitude in a bid to give voice to the grievances of the common man.
