It gives me immense pleasure while writing these words to introduce to the readers this republished edition of the biography of Mahamana Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya written by Shri Parmanand. The decision to republish this biography is one of the many important programs taken up by the university to commemorate the historic occasion of the one hundred and fiftieth birth anniversary of Malaviyaji. It is a fortunate coincidence that the decision to sponsor this biography was taken by the Banaras Hindu University on the occasion of Mahamana's centenary celebrations - however it could ultimately be released only in 1985. The illustrious life and path breaking contributions of Malaviya ji reflect his greatness. He exemplified through his life and works a rare vision which synthesized the past with the future without losing sight of the present.
This builder of the modern India was a great patriot, a visionary educationist, a dedicated social reformer, an outstanding orator and an exceptional statesman. The present biography of Malaviyaji remembers him not only as an exemplary individual but also as a vigorous phenomenon who steered his way through the tumultuous events of one of the formative phases of India. This biography is divided into two volumes. The first volume deals with Malaviya ji's life since his birth in 1861 upto 1920 while the second volume covers the rest of his life till his passing away in 1946.
The first volume consists in, besides numerous other aspects, the moving accounts of Malaviya Ji's parentage, his birth and childhood, his education at home, at school and at college, the influence of several personalities on him during those formative years, his tryst with theatre, journalism, law and politics, his humanitarian concern for the poor students and the indentured labour, his concept of art ideal university and the consequent successful pursuit for it. The second volume deals with Malaviya Ji's continued place of significance in the national politics, his struggle for India's Independence, his disagreement with Gandhi ji on certain ideas and methods of their implementation, his peace-making missions in the communally disturbed areas of the country, his imprisonment, his visit to England for Round Table Conference etc. along with his untiring passion for quality education of the masses.
This biography regularly highlights the fact that education remained the most obsessive passion of his life. Hence the biographer finds Malaviya Ji always concerned about the betterment of Banaras Hindu University, his peerless creation, even amidst the grave political and historical situations. As a historical document, this biography sheds meaningful light on the momentous struggle for independence in which Mahamana occupied centre stage. The present biography will serve as a source of inspiration to the readers. Malaviyaji's life, his dreams and the very way in which he devoted his spirit, body and soul to their realization will show the true path to the younger readers. I congratulate the 'Core Committee for Publication of Malaviya Granthmala' for their efforts in initiating the republishing of this biography after nearly twenty five years and all members of the `Editorial Board' for their contribution.
