Foreword

The Asiatic Society as part of its special programmes on North-East India has recently taken initiative to extend its academic programmes in the form of research projects, seminars, workshops, endowment lectures and so on. The Society also decided to organise some of the seminar and lecture programmes in different regions of North-East India. In 2011 the Society had organised a seminar programme in collaboration with the History Department of Gauhati University. On this important occasion the Society introduced the first Krishnakanta Handiqui Memorial Lecture which was delivered by Professor Ashok Kumar Goswami, former Professor of Sanskrit, Gauhati University on 9th March, 2011. Subsequently over the next seven years five lectures were so far delivered by very distinguished scholars primarily in the field of Indology in our country. This was in tune with the thrust areas of academic engagement of Professor K. K. Handiqui, the first Vice-Chancellor of Gauhati University and an acclaimed scholar of Sanskrit known for his contributions not only in North-East India but in the whole of the country and even beyond. Professor Nabanarayan Bandyopadhyay's brief introduction has substantially covered the main points touched upon by the individual speakers.

The Society has recently introduced another endowment lecture on Professor Anundoram Borooah. I sincerely hope that we will be able to extend our academic activities gradually in North-East India in the years to come.

Introduction

Mahatam samstavo gauravaya-coming cantact to a great person is of proud privilege. Krishnakanta Handiqui was such a personality that the academic and administrative fraternity of the world can boast of. His marvellous contribution to the study and research of ancient Indian language and literature and to the dissemination of education and culture generally in India and particularly in Assam is still cherished in high esteem. Any attempt to pay homage to this bright star in the firmanent of academic pursuit is always deserving.

The Asiatic Society, Kolkata, established in 1784 and declared an Institute of National importance in 1984, is engaged in investigating whatever is performed by a man or produced by nature within the geographic limits of Asia. The major activities of the Society are: a) to organise, initiate and promote researches in humanities and science in Asia; b) to run and maintain reading rooms, museums and to undertake research projects both internal and external; c) to organise lectures, seminars, workshops, exhibitions, etc.; d) to edit and publish important texts/books and journals; e) to institute fellowships, lectureships, awards, medals, honours, etc. The K.K. Handiqui Memorial lecture is one of the prestigious lectures of the Society.

The first lecture was delivered by professor Ashok Kumar Goswami at Gauhati University on 9th March 2011. The second, third, fourth and fifth lectures were delivered by Professor Dileep Kumar Kanjilal on 2nd March 2012, Professor Debabrata Sen Sharma on 19th July 2016, Dr. Pradip Bhattacharya on 4th August 2017 and Professor Dipak Kumar Sharma on 29th September 2018, respectively. It is a matter of great pleasure that all these lectures given by the renowned scholars are being published by The Asiatic Society in a volume in hallowed memory of the late lamented Professor K.K. Handiqui. A brief profile of Prof. Handiqui will not be out of place here.
