I compliment the authors - Dr Jayashree Bhat, Mili Mary Mathew, Sreya N M and Anshul Arora for their significant contribution to the early diagnosis of cognitive linguistic disorders through an easy-to-use diagnostic tool. Spoken language distinguishes man from all other primates and linguistic disorder can be indicative of an underlying pathology or by itself can disrupt routine functioning of an individual. May this work be recognized as a reference screening tool or a gold standard for the diagnosis of linguistic disabilities.

Manipal University Press (MUP) has successfully published several academic works, in a variety of knowledge domains and each one of them has been accepted enthusiastically by the academic community. It is the endeavour of MUP to encourage faculty members to write, publish their writings and disseminate these academic outputs.

Manipal Manual for Cognitive Linguistic Abilities (MMCLA) has been designed to aid professionals in the field of Speech Language Pathology, in the diagnosis of Cognitive Linguistic deficits exhibited by individuals with neurogenic communication disorders. Considering the growing trend of Indian-English being dominant in our country, we felt the need for an assessment tool to cater to the needs of bilinguals with communication disorders.

MMCLA assesses three Cognitive Linguistic processes: perception, memory and executive functions in Indian-English. It has been developed to have an account of the presence or absence of a Cognitive Linguistic deficit, to assess the severity of deficits and evaluate modality specific disturbances, in visual and auditory mode. The norms for this tool have been established on healthy individuals above the age of 18 years and on individuals with Cognitive Linguistic impairments above the age of 50 years. The manual also provides some insight into the management of Cognitive Linguistic disorders.

The manual has been organized into two parts; the first part contains an introduction to the test covering five chapters and the second part contains the stimulus booklet. Chapter 1 gives a brief introduction to the various theoretical accounts of different cognitive processes, Cognitive Linguistic disorders and their assessment and management. Chapter 2 contains a detailed description of the test. Chapter 3 provides the administration and scoring instructions. Chapter 4 contains the MMCLA summary form and score sheet. Chapter 5 explains the standardization and results of the test. The stimulus booklet has the test stimuli for the items in the tool that assess these processes in the visual modality.

All these chapters are comprehensive, will enable the reader in understanding the assessment tool, and equip them in administering it.
