The Marathas had brilliant traditions of political and cultural attainments. There is no doubt that Shivaji was the harbinger of the Maratha national unity, though it has to be noted that the ground was prepared for his rise by several other factors. The contemporary Maratha administration of Peshwa was based on Hindu Shastras, Muslim laws, reforms made by Shivaji him of and his successors and amendments done by Peshwas. Thus the system of Peshwas was a mixture of many features. To enable the readers both students and scholars to formulate their own independent views on the subject.

The Maratha are an Indian warrior caste, found predominantly in the state of Maharashtra. The term Maratha has two related usages: within the Marathi-speaking region it describes the dominant Maratha caste; historically, the term describes the kingdom founded by Shivaji in the seventeenth century and continued by his successors.
The Maratha Empire or the Maratha Confederacy was an Indian imperial power that existed from 1674 to 1818. At its peak, the empire covered much of the subcontinent, encompassing a territory of over 2.8 million km². The Marathas are credited with ending the Mughal rule in India.
The Marathas were a yeoman Hindu warrior group from the western Deccan (present day Maharashtra) that rose to prominence by establishing 'Hindawi Swarajya'.
Shivaji was a Maratha aristocrat of the Bhosle clan who is considered to be the historical founder of the Maratha empire. Shivaji led a resistance to free the Maratha people from the Sultanate of Bijapur, and re-establish Hindavi Swarajya ("self-rule of Hindu people"). He created an independent Maratha kingdom with Vedant Raigad as its capital, and successfully fought against the Mughals to defend his kingdom. He was crowned as Chhatrapati ("sovereign") of the new Maratha kingdom in 1674. The state as Shivaji founded it was a Maratha kingdom comprising about 4.1% of the subcontinent at the time he died but over time it was to increase in size and heterogeneity, and by the time of the Peshwas in the early 18th century was a full-fledged empire, with Shivaji as its historical founder.
