Any marriage, to be successful, needs to demonstrate 'cooperation and corroboration' and 'give and take' from the couple. If not, the marriage will fail. It cannot be a one-sided affair. Astrology also has to work on similar principles when it comes to matching of horoscopes. It is the corroboration of planetary positions, combinations and aspects in both horoscopes and not in one horoscope alone, that will decide the success or failure of a marriage.
The objective of this book is also to make it a 'Compendium' of Astrological concepts with special focus on marriage matching, with 'real life illustrations', so that these are easily understood by the readers. I am confident that for 'Believers' in Astrology, who are especially beginners, this book will serve as a useful guide and sounding board not only for 'matching of horoscopes' but also to evaluate post marital lives including Child birth and Prosperity, besides understanding other basic concepts in Astrology. I also firmly believe that readers will find the 'Matching Matrix' provided in Chapter 10 and FAQs provided in Chapter 11 along with answers and links to various Chapters, as useful tools in their quest to sharpen their astrological skills for matching of horoscopes and related concepts.
The Author of the Book Sri B. Hariharan is a Chartered Accountant, Company Secretary and Cost Accountant by profession. He held a very senior position in an Industrial conglomerate headquartered in Delhi in the Finance function and retired as Chairman of a Listed company of the Group. He is a native of Nagercoil in Tamilnadu. His father Late Sri H Bhuthalingam, though was a retired banker was better known as a famous Astrologer in Trivandrum and Nagercoil where he spent the best part of his life. He practiced Astrology as a hobby without receiving any consideration whatsoever from his clients.
The Author learnt the basics of Astrology from his Late father and dedicates the Book to him.
Indian astrology is the oldest system of astrology in the world, and it differs from the Western system and Chinese astrology. It is a natural science and dates back to 3000 BC. History of astrology has its roots in the Hindu Vedas, the oldest scriptures in the world. It is highly authentic and its predictions are believed to be the most accurate. It believes Sun as the basis of life.
As per Indian astrology, every event in our life is based on position of celestial bodies at a particular time, date, and place of birth. This form of astrology believes that it is God Almighty who is handling everything, and he decides the time of birth of the individual according to their past karma so that he or she can have the life in which they are best suited for. In Sanskrit, the word Jyotish, translated as 'science of light', refers to the mathematically sophisticated form of astrology, originating in the Vedic traditions of India. Vedic astrology predicts life events of a person from his/her birth chart, drawn according to their time of birth, date, and place. Vedic astrology uses sidereal astronomical calculations for determining planetary positions at the time of a person's birth. The originator of Vedic astrology is Saint Parasara. His treatise is the only surviving Vedic writing on astrology.
This work is an exercise in erudition, scholarship, and an act of faith. Sri B Hariharan is my student and underwent apprenticeship for chartered accountancy course. During the period of his apprenticeship, he exhibited a rare quality education and practical knowledge. His is a family of astrologers and I have, on many occasions, interacted with his father, Sri H Bhuthalingam, a Bank officer, having had his stint with State Bank of Travancore. In moments of depression, and when life seemed to be moving rudderlessly, his words had brought in far-reaching consequences and courage to face a situation.
Jyothisha Sastra, or astrology, is an aspect of Hindu culture, a recognized subject of learning, and is considered as a Vedanga. It is therefore a part of great tradition. It plays an important part in the life of an average Hindu. When a child is born, and horoscope is cast, and when the astrologer says that it is a good one the parents are happy. A learned astrologer, thus, commands good respect in our society.
When Buddha was born, his father consulted veteran astrologers, who predicted the certainty of the person becoming a saint. Even converts to Islam and Christianity are not free from the influence of astrology. There is a theory that planets and stars were worshipped in the Indus Valley culture.
There is a prevailing notion among most of us, including astrologers, that the matching of horoscopes should be based on 'Dasa vidha porutham' (ten star agreements). If the agreement between two horoscopes is 6 and above, the horoscopes are generally considered good for matching. This is a very wrong understanding. Even some astrologers give a go-ahead for matching by just looking at star agreements alone. If stars are the only basis on which horoscopes are to be matched, then the need for casting horoscopes does not arise. Marriages based on this approach alone mostly end in failures.
Based on the references to various astrological books, including those of my father, Late Sri H Bhuthalingam, views of eminent astrologers, and my own research of umpteen number of horoscopes of couples, I have come to the conclusion that there are several important factors to be considered before the matching of horoscopes are cleared.
The important factors, as above, have been divided and arranged into various chapters as outlined below. A summary has also been provided under each chapter to capture the salient points covered in each chapter.
All the illustrative horoscopes examined in the book have been depicted both in the 'South Indian' and 'North Indian' styles to make it easier for readers who are familiar with either of the styles.
