India is one of the 12 megabiodiversity centers of the world. It is one of the richest country in plant wealth and medicinal plant heritage. This book brings out all this medicinal plant wealth at one place.
Medicinal uses of 846 species occurring in India are given in this book. The species are arranged in alphabetical sequence. Under each species valid scientific name, synonym if any, family, brief description, distribution in India, flowering and fruiting season, Sanskrit names of local names in all languages of India corresponding to the area, trade name and medicinal uses are given. Active principle or chemistry have been given wherever available. Chemical structures of some important compounds have also been included. Both traditional uses and modern pharmaceutical uses have been given. References and names of Companies in medicinal plants trade have been mentioned. At the end Index to Sanskrit Names and Index to Trade Names have been given. The book is supported by line drawings and colour photographs for easy identification in the field. Medical uses of both wild and cultivated plants have been included in the book. Propagation method for most species and packages of practices for cultivation of some medicinal plants have also been given.
About the Author :
Prof. T. Pullaiah obtained his M.Sc. (1973) and Ph.D., (1976) degree in Botany from Andhra University. He was a Post Doctoral Fellow at Moscow State University, Russia during 1976-78. He traveled widely in Europe and visited Universities and Botonical Gardens in about 16 countries. Professor Pullaiah joined Sri Krishnadevaraya University as a Lecturer in 1979 and became Professor in 1993. At present he is Dean, Faculy of Life Sciences; Head, Department of Botany; Co-ordinator and Chairman BOS in Biotechnology.
Professor Pullaiah has published 23 books, 180 research papers and 35 popular articles. His books include Embryology of Compositae; Flora of Andhra Pradesh (4 Vols.); Trees of Andhra pradesh; Taxonomy of Angiospers; Flora of Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, India; Flora of Ranga Reddi District; Flora of Anantapur District; Flora of Kurnool; Flora of Nizamabad; Embryology and Apomixis in Grasses; Flora of Eastern Ghats - Vol. 1 and Vol. 2; Biodiversity in India - Vol. 1; etc. He is principal investigator of 14 major Research Projects totaling more than 70 lakhs funded by DBT, DST, CSIR, DOEF, GCC and WWF. Under his guidance 35 students obtained their Ph.D. degree and 32 students obtained their M.Phill. degree.
He is recipient of Best Teacher Award from Government of Andhra Pradesh and receipient of Panchanan Mahaeshwari Medal of Indian Botonical Society for the year 2002 and Y.D. Tyagi Gold Medal of Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy. He is a Member of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
