Uttaranchal, being a hilly state possesses a rich amount of medicinal plant wealth. The prospects are very bright if a systematic scheme is followed regarding its medicinal plants wealth. This book on 'Medicinal Plants of Uttaranchal State' gives an account on more than 500 plant species of medicinal importance mostly found wild in the state, of them about 400 plants are discussed in details. Of each plant, the origin of its generic names, description, vernacular names in Sanskrit, Hindi, English and Local languages are given. Besides, the distribution, usable parts and medicinal uses along with local folk-medicinal uses of each plant species are discussed. The work is appended with many appendices, which include listing on Important Wild Plants used in Traditional Medicines by the Local People and Vaidyas; Common Bazar Medicines sold in the Market; Important Plants and Their Ayurvedic and Unani Preparations; List of Endangered Medicinal Plant Species and Glossary on Medical Terms.

This is hoped that this book will be useful for Research Workers, Plant Taxonomists, Medical students and the persons engaged in pharmaceutical concerns beside, the general laymen interested in the higher altitude's medicinal plants and of Uttaranchal state in particular.

Dr. Anil Kumar Dhiman (born in 1965), is M.Sc., Ph.D. (Botany). M.A. (Pol. Sci.), M.L.I.Sc., PGDCA and B.Ed beside, the Ayurveda Ratan. He has proficiency in Russian, Sanskrit, Urdu, Hindi and English languages. His Doctrate work is based on the Medicinal Flora of Haridwar, which contains information on ethno-medicinal and ethno botanical uses of the plants. Presently, he is working as Information Scientist in the library of Gurukul Kangri University. Haridwar (U.A.). He has taught botany to under graduate classes in Botany Department, Gurukul Kangri University, Haridwar (U.A.) for sometimes during 1995-96 under distance education programme and also worked as Counsellor of Library Science for Haridwar Chapter of U.P. Rajrishi Open University, Allahabad in 2000 and 2001. Presently, he is Honorary Lecturer of Library Science at Library Science Training Center, Roorkee and teaching to the students of Certificate Course of Library Science. He is Elected Fellow of Society of Ethno botanists (FES), Lucknow (India) and Fellow of United Writer Association of India (FUWAI), and life member of several professional societies viz., Academy of Plant Sciences of India (Muzaffarnagar), Indian Botanical Society, Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centers (Calcutta), Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science, Indian Library Association, (Delhi), Society of Ethnobotanists, Lucknow (India), Uttaranchal Pustakalaya Association and Uttar Pradesh Library Association, (Lucknow).

He has eleven books to his credit; 4 in Botany and 7 in Library Science besides, over 50 papers. He has attended various national seminars and conferences and also had been the member of organizing committees of seminars of national repute. His name has been referred in various directories of national and international fames. He is also awarded with the APSI Gold Medal and Young Scientist Award 1999.
