The Meghadutavyakhya by Janardana is a valuable, important and useful work, preserved in a singular (codex-unicum), complete and a dated Manuscript in the Oriental Institute. Janardana is a scholar from Gujarat, whose exhaustive comments on the Meghaduta are interesting and enlightening on the different aspects like grammar, geography & textual variants. The publication of the said work was a long felt desideratum. Shri Purushottam H. Joshi, Research Officer, Oriental Institute and Prof. Bhagvatprasad Pandya, Ex-Research Officer and (lastly) Professor, in the Department of Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit, had taken up this project jointly and had taken great pains in reading minute writings and copying down the entire Manuscript. But with sad sudden demise of Shri P.H. Joshi in 2002, the work was much lingering. In 2008, I took up the project of completing the remaining work. I, therefore, completely checked it from the original, edited it and prepared the fresh press-copy. I also tried to trace out most of the quotations, prepared several appendices and wrote the Introduction on the basis of the material available. This work is now being presented to the world of scholars. I am thankful to Dr. S. Y. Wakankar, Ex-Deputy Director for going through the entire text and making useful suggestions. In this endeavour, for grammatical explanations, I had some fruitful discussions with Prof. Jaydev Jani, Prof. Malhar Kulkarni and Principal Shri Yogesh Oza, whose assistance is acknowledged here. I am grateful to the Research Staff of the Institute especially, Dr. Usha Brahmachari, Dr. Sweta Prajapati, Shri Jayant Umarethiya, Dr. Sharmila Bagchi, Dr. Milind Joshi and Shri Manoj Upadhyaya for their sincere co-operation and assistance in several ways, during the process of publications of this book. I am thankful to Shri P.N. Shrivastava, Manager, the M. S. University Press and his colleagues for their prompt action and needful support in respect of facilitating quick and neat printing of this book. I also thank the University authorities for sanctioning the grant, needed for its publication. Like all our other books in the series, I am sure that this book will also be well received by the scholars and researchers.
