We are happy to place in the hands of Sanskritists the Meghamala ('Wreath of Clouds') which is a work unique in its kind and nature. This work which is being presented to the Sanskrit World for the first time is an interesting text belonging partly to the field of Astrology and partly to Ominology (Sakuna Sastra). A large portion of this work deals with the issues which now a days form part of the scientific discipline of Meteorology or Weather Science. Our author, however, makes his predictions about rain and weather by simply observing the positions of Planets in conjunction with various constellations and the like. But he is not contented by simply making his observations regarding the Wind and Weather. He proceeds further and makes predictions regarding the quality of a crop and also the prices of different commodities in the harvest season to come. He also pays attention to the general well-being of the various social groups and geograhpical regions.
The Sanskrit of Meghamala is not chaste and grammatically pure at many places. It is something like "Brahmanical Hybrid-Sanskrit" which clearly expresses its purpurt and purpose but often flouts the rules of Panini. A number of works belonging to the disciplines of Vastu Sastra, Jyotisa, and Tantra etc. were composed in this type of Brahmanical Hybrid Sanskrit in the medieval ages (after 1000 AD.) when the standard of Sanskrit sank but not its popularity or sacred character.
