"Thus the import here is that all the names and forms are passing away, perishable and so unreal. The stable and real entity behind this is the One without second Reality, the Sat-cit-cinanda Lord. He alone is appearing as all these names and forms - this attitude of looking at the world (Weltanschauung), this attitude of looking at life (Lebensanschauung), this 'cid-, the `correct and proper perception'- is the message of Upanifads to us, the blind modern men who have a wrong, illusive, incorrect and blind attitude of looking at life and the world."
In commemoration of 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda we are glad to introduce to the readers this book on Upanisads translated in English, entitled "The Message of UpanLyads to Modern Man". It was originally written in Marathi by Swami Shivatatvananda (1919-1991) and published by Ramakrishna Math, Nagpur in the year 1976.
Today in this modern age, science and technology has brought about tremendous progress yet modern man's mind is full of tension, restlessness and frustration. Faith on eternal values of life is declining and since there are no new values of life in front of him, a kind of vacuum is being created in modern man's life. Due to the lack of values which hold restraint over life, individual and collective, life is badly shattered and like a rudderless ship it is wandering aimlessly. In such situation the message of Upanisads gives the right attitude of looking at life and the world and shows the path of peace and happiness to the perplexed, miserable man.
Modern man's disease is the materialistic and sensual attitude of looking at life and the remedy on this disease is the samyak-ffic7na i.e. right knowledge based on spirituality. Upanisads give this right knowledge and turn man's attention from body to spirit. Giving up the distinction, Upanisads teach man to go to oneness which is the basis of spirituality. This book clearly depicts in a most discerning way how the message of Upanisads helps in avoiding ruination of mankind and in imparting peace and happiness to them. It is our sincere hope and wish that modern man, buffeted by shocks and miseries will certainly find solace and the path of peace and happiness from this book.
