Professor Basnyat is a --- Brigadier General (Retd) of the Nepalese army. He was commissioned in 1983 and posted to the Sri Nath Battalion as his mother unit, then he spent 12 years at the Bhairab Nath Battalion (Para Commando-Special Forces). As Company Commander and Battalion Commander too, he led several counter insurgency battles (2002 -2006) during Maoist Insurgency in Nepal. Similarly he served in several higher level appointments in his distinguished military career spanning more than three decades. He takes a keen interest in military history, global peace, conflict management, International security and has made many remarkable scholastic contributions in the field. He currently serves as a Professor at Lesan Normal University China, and Visiting Professor at several National and International Institutions and Higher Training Institutions of the Nepalese Army. He is also the Chairman of Nepal Museum Association and founder curator of the only Military Museum and Army Memorial, Kathmandu.

Dr. Basnyat is the descendant of Commander-In-Chief Kaji Shiva Ram Singh Basnyat, Commander-In-Chief Kehar Singh Basnyat, Prime Minister Mul Kaji Bakhtawar Singh Basnyat, Minister Kul Man Singh Basnyat and many more. He holds three National records : the first PhD and the first British Chevening Scholar from the Nepalese army and the first Master in Global Security from the United Kingdom.

This book Military History and Heritage of Nepal, a collection of introductory information of the forts from which Nepal launched various battles against its adversaries or against which its adversaries launched various battles, takes you back to Nepal's past-glorious as well as fraught with sense of loss. Reading Dr. Prem Singh Basnyat, a historian who writes about Nepal's military history, geopolitics and international relations, is like travelling back to time.

Readers get insights about the battles Gorkhali forces (later Nepali forces) fought within and outside the current territorial boundaries of Nepal. Beginning with Nepal's war against Sikkim, coming down to the war of unification led by King Prithvi Narayan Shah, to the war against British India to the last war Nepal fought against the foreign power-the war against Tibet-the book chronicles the details of gallantry and loss that Nepal stood witness to.

In this sense, the book can best be described as an account of wars with the details of the forts through which those wars were fought. In it is the description of forts from Mechi in the east to Mahakali in the western frontier.
