The temples- great and small contain a variety of images of gods and goddesses in various postures. Though most of us go to temples, very few take the interest to observe these images in close quarters and to understand the significance of their existence in several places. If only a proper understanding of nature of these images is made, it would enable us to appreciate more, the otherwise verbal admiration of the handiwork of our ancient artist and also enable us to venerate and understand them better. A study of the images is termed iconography and this forms a part of the science of aesthetics and is one of the most absorbing branches of Fine Art.
