The aim of this book Modern Indian Political Thinkers is to give the readers the opportunity to study a range of Indian political thinkers who are considered to be key in the 'canon' of Indian political thought. It provides a thematic exploration of the contextual meanings and configurations of major political ideas and ideals that have shaped the political world of colonial and post-colonial India. Selected thinkers are examined with a view to their lasting contribution to the understanding of political life.

The book explores the way Indian intellectuals encountered colonial modernity and examines how the Indian nation-state came to be constituted as a community of communities. The book will be an appropriate textbook for students and researchers of Indian politics. Readers are expected to engage with specified original texts and writings of the major Indian political thinkers.

Girish Malhotra, an eminent scholar and a seasoned teacher of political science did his masters' and doctorate degrees in political science. He has about twenty years of profe- ssional experience. Throughout his career he has been associated with a number of academic institutions. He is a winner of many scholarships and prestigious awards for his academic excellence.

Dr. Malhotra has participated in many national and international conferences. He has published a number of outstanding books on political theory, public admini- stration, international relations and terrorism. A well known social worker, he sincerely devoted his time to work against human rights violations, gender inequality, corruption, etc.

Modern in this context has to be understood in contrast to 'ancient' and relates to the emergence and subsequent consolidation of modernity in India from the nineteenth century on. Selected thinkers are examined with a view to their lasting contribution to the understanding of political life.
