Back of the Book
"Ecstasy is such a great 'Aha!' that you are completely dissolved into it. It becomes your very song, your celebration, your dance. Life is a mystery to be lived, not a problem to be solved. Life is a mystery to be lost in, not a problem to be handled.
In this second volume from The Discipline of Transcendence series, Osho continues to talk on the 42 earliest-surviving Buddhist sutras. By using the word discipline, Osho carves away the conventional, well understood, meaning of the word, so that the reader is able to move from what he already understands, into territory he may never have explored before.
Osho encourages the use of awareness to reveal the natural discipline that comes from listening to oneself. Simply reading this book will inspire you to new revelations about your own life.
About the Author
Osho defies categorization. His thousands of talks cover every- thing from the individual quest for meaning to the most urgent social and political issues facing society today. Osho's books are not written but are transcribed from audio and video recordings of his extemporaneous talks to international audiences. As he puts it, "So remember: whatever I am saying is not just for you. I am talking also for the future generations."
Osho has been described by The Sunday Times in London as one of the"1000 Makers of the 20th Century" and by American author Tom Robbins as "the most dangerous man since Jesus Christ." Sunday Mid-Day (India) has selected Osho as one of ten people - along with Gandhi, Nehru and Buddha - who have changed the destiny of India.
About his own work Osho has said that he is helping to create the conditions for the birth of a new kind of human being. He often characterizes this new human being as "Zorba the Buddha" -capable both of enjoying the earthy pleasures of a Zorba the Greek and the silent serenity of a Gautama the Buddha.
Running like a thread through all aspects of Osho's talks and meditations is a vision that encompasses both the timeless wisdom of all ages past and the highest potential of today's (and tomorrow's) science and technology.
Osho is known for his revolutionary contribution to the science of inner transformation, with an approach to meditation that acknowledges the accelerated pace of contemporary life. His unique OSHO Active Meditations are designed to first release the accumulated stresses of body and mind, so that it is then easier to take an experience of stillness and thought-free relaxation into daily life.
Preface
You may have become aware, but that in itself will not be enough in the beginning because the mind, finding any opportunity to move in any old pattern, immediately slips in a split second. It takes no time to become angry. By the time you become aware, anger has already flashed.
Later on, when your awareness has become total, when your awareness has become an absolute for you, awareness is always there before anything happens, as an a priori. If anger comes, awareness is there before anger; if sexuality possesses you, awareness is there before it. When awareness has become a natural, spontaneous thing, like breathing, when it is there even in your sleep, then discipline can be discarded. But in the beginning-no. In the beginning, when awareness is settling, discipline will be helpful.
Discipline is simply an effort to create new pathways for the energy to move on, so that it need not move on the old pathway.
