Museums act as great repository of our past. But are they only meant to preserve the past for the present, or the present for the future? Or are they also meant to anticipate future for us, as is evident from various futuristic museums related to science and discovery of human knowledge. The present book takes up all these issues in an easy-to-understand, and non-technical language to present an overview of the various dimensions, facets, role and contribution of Museums in India, besides giving insight into career opportunities available in the field. Mahua Chakrabarti is an Associate Professor in the Department of Museology, University of Calcutta. Awarded the gold medal for ranking first in order of merit in M.A. in Museology, University of Calcutta, she has been engaged in researches in the field of Museology as well as Indian art history for the last two decades. Author and editor of a number of books on Museology published from India and abroad, she has also guided researches on various aspects of Museology, archaeology and Indian art history, besides contributing research papers to various national and international seminars and conferences in India and abroad.
She is also member of International Council of Museums (ICOM), life member of the Asiatic Society, Kolkata, Indian Art History Congress, Museums Association of India, and Itihas Sammilani, Dhaka, Bangladeshe
This book tries to give a glimpse of Indian museums, which are the preservators of our national heritage. It covers a vast era to portray the history of Indian museums. It also defines their types and organizational patterns as well as their exhibition processes, communication and educational activities for the people. Moreover, career avenues in the field have also been described in this book.
