What is a name? What is in a name? Does name have some significance? Why are people named? How should one named? What sort of names should be shunned? I have encountered these questions right from end of twentieth century till this date. The name defies definition. It is just a name; the prime signifier, it has been termed a mantra. Only through a name is god worshiped - नमन्त्येभिरीश्वरम्द्ध Fame, respect, renown, aesthetics, success, grace, pride, glory and affection are all bonded with the name. नाम्नैव कीर्ति लभते मनुष्यःदृ It is only through the name that a person earns renown. A name is the smallest expression of a persona.
A name is not only necessary but essential for acquaintance and recognition. The name is first thing to be asked; by name alone do we learn of a place and destination. 'Whom do you wish to meet' looks for name of a person; 'what do you want' inquires about the object of desire.
The process cess of nomenclature is perpetual. To date, cities, towns, colonies, factories, market-places, buildings, ponds, gardens and even cattle, pets and birds are being named. A person is remembered by his name; the more powerful a person the greater power does his name wield. The name of Ram holds greater might than persona of Ram.
The name and the named are indeed one. Form and name both manifest the divine essence. The name incarnates the form and the form defies comprehension lacking name. Name is best witness situated on the edge of tangible and the unknown. It interprets reality of both with great acumen.
Names, especially of human beings, are universal. They are unique, subjective and historic in entity. Nomenclature is based on convenience as well as affection. One forms a bond with one's name of love, pride and belonging; and thus suppresses voice of reason. Despite the presence of such questions as why was the name so, when was it named thus and by whom, in practice it is accepted.
Little attention is paid to linguistic import of a name. Often, people do not know the meaning of their names and guess wildly about its possible connotations. One does not name oneself; it is parents, guardians or well- wishers who are responsible for the appellation. In response to certain facts or conditions and based on their knowledge and aesthetic sensibilities, the persons concerned name the newborn.
Hey, it is baby girl! Wow, congratulations. What's her name? Well it's a boy? many many congratulations. What name has been chosen? It often so happens that when someone is informed about arrival of a kid in the world, it is not possible to resist the temptation to ask for the name of the baby. Everybody wants to know with what name the new comer would be known. For we Indian, a name is not merely a symbol for call for someone but much more. It is the link of the person concerned with relatives, well wishers and above all the parents. A link which appears in continuity even after the fore fathers have all gone.
For us name is an important article of address. As such, we are always careful in naming a child. It should be meaningful, attractive and dignified. It is always the wish of the elders that a name should be subtle and dignified. The question of meaningful names relatives to the childs environment, his guardians, country, period and the given solar system. And every reason can give birth to different names. Any name is a point of that significant triangle which joins the other two points with respect to meaning and reference. Therefor the name of a person apart from being full of meaning connects in multiple ways the world of a particular persons. The moment a person is called by a certain name many memories and social thinking make their appearance.
Many a times it has been observed that parents select the name of the child always from the beaten track and different from the common usage. So that name and the named person both appear different and uncommon. Such a wish fails to materialize for a long time. The same happened in my case. To begin with people started calling me 'Anamika' but, the final decision on the suitability of my name kept pending for five years. But now such cases may not happen again. Triveniji's book has made such a task easy. Not only this the book provides innumerable options.
