It is heartening to note that the Department of English of the Vidyapeetha has successfully brought out this book which contains the papers presented in National Seminar on Narrative Literatures in English and Sanskrit conducted by the Vidyapeetha on 3" and 4" September, 2013.
Narrative, in the east as well as the west, occupies a significant position in all creative literature. In fact, it is a natural human instinct to tell stories or narratives. Many a seminar has been organized and many a book has been brought out on what the various narratives say. The seminar and this book which it reflects, is unique in the sense that it is not about what narratives say but how the narratives are presented in Sanskrit and English and to what purpose. In fact the area 'Narrative' records not only a rich mine of human experience but also showcases a rich variety in its presentation. For instance, in Sanskrit literature, apart from the variety one notices in the types of narrative, one can discern different styles of narration in different regions of our country as described in the poetics.
The scholarly papers presented in this volume indicate to the possible range of the inexhaustible treasure that narrative is. Very rich in themselves in terms of variety, technique and style, the narrative traditions of Sanskrit and English also allow for a comparative analysis which some of the articles of the book concentrate on; while others reflect on the exclusive features of Sanskrit narratives and English narratives.
With more than a score of papers, this book stands testimony to the efforts of the Vidyapeetha to contemporize Sanskrit studies. I commend the Department of English in its attempts in this direction and wish the publication a success.
