Preface

The book, originally part of my doctoral thesis, embodies the result of my studies and research on the National Movement, Vernacular Newspapers and Literature. A Study on Odisha. I was inspired to take up the project by revered guide Prof.Dr.Subash Chandra Padhy, Berhampur University, Bhanja Bihar.

The present study has been ventilated the crucial role of vernacular newspapers and odia literature during national movement The purpose behind study is to explore the spirit of patriotism towards motherland of odia people. Hoe they contributed in national movement through the odia literature and newspapers. To locate the role played by vernacular newspapers of 19th and 20th century in imbibing nationalism among the people of odisha. And highlighting the spreading Gandhian ideology among the masses and reporting the events of freedom struggle during Gandhian era.

The work has traced the dominant role played by other form of odia literature like odia prose, odia drama, odia novel, odia Short story in awaking the people against colonialism. An attempt has taken to highlight the odia poetry in creating public opinion and national feeling against colonial master during the period of freedom movement Poetry was the first and foremost medium through which the poets infused into the people the sense of patriotism and nationalism. Besides poetry, through other literary creations, they expressed their own patriotic emotions, love for the motherland and conveyed their message of national glory and freedom.

The press played a conspicuous role in the propagating the news and views of great odia leaders. The vernacular press and newspapers which with government backing and blessing had initiated the process of socio-political transformation in the nineteenth, century went a step further in the twentieth century.

With the emergence of Indian renaissance in 19th century the dry veins of the Indians were surcharged with new feelings of patriotism.Consequently religion and reflection of Bhagavat satta. The enlightened Indians now became ardent champions of national interest and the writers used their powerful imagination for upsurge of nationalist overflow.

The intelligentsia such as the poets, philosophers, writers and other literary persons have always played a key role in awakening the people of any century. Newspapers and journals published in English and vernacular languages, from different parts of the country, exposed the misrule of the alien government The newspapers in their articles revealed the economic distress of people and blamed the British rules for the impoverishment of the Indians.
