I am really happy that the Department of Bengali recognised by the UGC as a Centre of Advanced Study is going to publish one volume entitled ‘Natyaoitijhya 0 Laghu Natak containing articles on Bengali Drama In its different aspects.
Dr Sibabrata Chattopadhyay with his special interest in Drama from academic point of view as well as from its performing aspect is an experienced faculty member who had published earlier these papers in different journals and edited volumes.
The period covered in these papers has a long span ranging from the first Bengali drama staged professionally in 18th century following European stage practice through Girishchandra Ghosh's dedicated efforts to the achievement of the present day stage personality, Ajitesh Bandyopadhyay. Dramatisation of Rabindranath Tagore's novels and their varying impact and the aspect of brief satirical stage presentations have also been covered.
I hope that the students, researchers and professionals having orientation towards drama will find the volume useful. The University puts on record its appreciation of the generous assistance given by UGC for bringing out significant publications. My heartfelt felicitation to Dr Chattopadhyay.
