It is one of the most beautiful countries in the world with breath-takingly high mountains (Mount Everest is located here), scenic valleys, and picturesque temples. It is the meeting place of two of Asia's great art traditions-Indian and Chinese.
The people reflect the mixing of the Mongol and Indo-Aryan races and the presence of many tribes, each with its quaint customs provides opportunities for the anthropologist to polish his science.
The population is predominantly Hindu including a sizeable Buddhist population with smaller numbers of Muslims and animists. The government was monarchical but now democratic norms have been introduced and Nepal is in fact the world's only Hindu kingdom.
Nepal has within its boundaries the birth-place of Gautama, the Buddha, the founder of one of the world's great religions. On another plane, the Gurkha warriors have fought with distinction in many of Britain's wars. The Sherpas who specialize in helping mountain climbers are noted for their skill and daring.
