The Next Birth With Liberation In Mind

We are strange creatures. Sample these: we, who are souls, spend our entire lives indentifying ourselves as material bodies. Liberation, achieving which is only possible in the human species, and is, therefore, the avowed goal of this species, is hardly attempted by many. A large percentage is not even thinking about it. This is not a conjecture, but a statement given by Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad-Geeta (verse #7.3), where He states that only a rare person strives for perfection, which can lead to liberation. This is because most of us do not really think and plan long-term.

Still, when a near/dear person passes away, we say that he or she has been liberated. But this is more of a hope than a real assessment, because being good is not sufficient qualification for gaining liberation. This requires much more. It is no wonder that Lord Krishna goes on to say that even amongst persons attempting such a goal, only a rare person achieves this privilege.

Then, the question arises, "Why are we not serious about it?" The answer is: we are unable to resist the urges of our bodies, which demand sense enjoyment, preferably, sensuous every moment of our lives. Unfortunately, most of us succumb to them quite readily. This makes us shortsighted and we harm ourselves in the long run.

In these circumstances, the best most people attempt is to become good persons. But, as stated earlier, that is not good enough. Liberation requires much more, rather a whole lot more. Our scriptures are full of such information.
