A poet and art-critic Nilakantha Diksita (17th century A.D.) stands supreme among the galaxy of writers of eminence. His works pertain to different branches of literature and are considerable in number. He has to his credit Mahakasvyas, Laghukavyas, Nataka, Campu, Agamic texts and commentaries. His poems overflow with humour and suggestiveness makes them relishable.
Nilakantha was a many-faceted genius who occupied different positions of political power under influential rulers. But his mind was engaged in the constant search for truth which prompted him to retire to the banks of Tamraparni to lead a life of piety till his soul merged with the Supreme Being.
Dr. N.P.unni (b.1936) has the unique distinction of being the first candidate to be awarded to be awarded Ph.D. in Sanskrit by the University of Kerala.
After a long teaching career he joined the Oriental Research and Manuscripts Library of the Kerala University as Curator. He has more than 25 books to his credit and has contributed scores of papers to many prominent journals in Indology. His publications include Studies in Sanskrit Dramas, Arthasastra, Bhasa Problems, Tantra Literature, Regional History in Sanskrit and editions of Kalidasa’s poems with commentaries. At present he is the Professor and Head of the Department of kerala University.
