Book Description
Preface

Though a large number of books and articles are available on the nonaligned foreign policies of different states, yet till today very little academic work has been done on the non- aligned movement as such. None of the books is a study on the aspect of institutionalization of the nonaligned movement as an international phenomenon. It is the purpose of this book to fill in this gap in the academic study of nonalignment. In each of the chapters an attempt has been made to examine whether and if so to what extent, the nonaligned states have resorted to institution-building within the movement and how far the movement owes its proliferation to such institutionalization. The study has been based on historical analysis, empirieal verification and content analysis of the nonaligned.

conference documents and the United Nations documents. The book opens with a study of the nature and evolution of the nonaligned movement in stages. This is followed by a study of an important attribute of the process of institutionalization, namely, participation and seeks to trace the nature of such participation, the reasons behind the phenomenal increase in membership, and studies the general and specific factors that have led to the adoption of nonalignment as a foreign policy strategy in different states and areas of the world. The following chapter has unfolded yet another aspect of institution-building, namely, procedure building, and has sought to examine, in what manner the nonaligned states have evolved operational procedures within the movement. The next chapter focuses on the difficult but extremely important problem of interest articulation and interest aggregation of the nonaligned member states, how their differences and disagreements are reconciled. Assuming that preoccupation with economic issues has become the predominant feature of the nonaligned movement in the 1970's, attempt has been made to study the bargaining strategy of the nonaligned countries for their common economic interests.
