Congratulate Shri Alok Mehta for his book, Naman Narmada which showcases photographs of the Narmada from Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh to Gujarat.
The book by Shri Alok Mehta contains a rich history of the Narmada River and also highlights the importance of the Narmada in the cultural milieu of India, particularly among the people of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
The message of conservation of rivers has also been highlighted in the book. In this day and age, it is absolutely essential we conserve our river ecosystems. They are essential for the wellbeing of our farmers and for the sustainable development of humanity. In this context, this book by Shri Alok Mehta would hopefully inspire more people to study about the Narmada and even engage themselves in water conservation efforts.
Narmada Maiya (Mother) has sustained us for ages, gave us life and protected our ancestors Narmada does not emanate from hills, it does not emanate from the melting now Narmada takes her shape from the blessings of every single plant, hills of Vindhyachal and blesses our lives. I was born in Historical city Ujjain of Malva region. With Jyotirlinga Mahakal we have River Shipra, due to her water limitation whole region struggled for years to get water of Narmada We know the value of every single drop of Narmada's water. The Narmada is major source of drinking water, irrigation and Hydroelectricity for Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat and also benefit power to Rajasthan and Maharashtra. After 54 years efforts now we have Sardar Sarovar Dam on Narmada in Gujarat, which is second largest dam in the world. In fact fifth largest river in the Indian Sub-Continent Indian Culture is the gift of Sindhu and Ganga Narmada is one of seven holy rivers of India, other in being Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari Saraswati, Sindhu & Kaveri. People believe that the greatest is Ganga, but historically the Narmada is oldest river. Most of our rivers go in cast side, but Narmada flow westwards we can claim that Narmada is life line for western India. Narmada is cradle of civilization and represent a competent culture. This divine and mystique river has been glorified even by the Vedas and later Kalidas and others. It is worshipped as Mother Goddess Narmada for ages out of deep gratitude. Some of the oldest cave paintings in the world over 30000 years old are found at the Bhimbetka caves, near the banks of the Narmada Adi Shankara was initiated into snayas at Omkareshwar, on the banks of the Narmada. The banks of Narmads are strewn with centres of pilgrimage and temples where the devotees attained spiritual elevation. Few beautiful developed spots are becoming attraction for tourists from all over world. However very few books available on Narmada with compact facts and wonderful photographs. Therefore when I suggested a coffee table Book to very reputed publisher Mr. Sanjay Arya, he immediately accepted my idea. I also tried to project only Historical, social and economic aspects without touching politics. Now days people are more interested in positive sides for their life. I wish and Hope this book will be very useful not only for Indians, but millions of India loving readers, Jai Narmade-Sarvade.
