The present volume is a selection of Sri Aurobindo's political writings and speeches. Most of the contents are from 1906-1910, when Sri Aurobindo was one of the leaders of the advanced nationalist school of Indian politics. During this period he edited and wrote for three newspapers in which the doctrines of this school were formulated. Two of these, Bande Mataram and Karmayogin, were in English, the other, Dharma, in Bengali. Few of his articles were signed, but there is little doubt that all those selected for inclusion here are from his pen. On Nationalism also includes some writings from before and after the period of Sri Aurobindo's active involvement in Indian politics. Dates of publication are given at the end of most pieces.

Apropos of a selection of Karmayogin articles published in 1937, Sri Aurobindo wrote that they should not be taken as representative of his views "on the burning problems of the day". To do so would be to suggest that there had been "no change in my views in 27 years (which would surely be proof of a rather unprogressive mind) .... My spiritual consciousness and knowledge at that time was as nothing to what it is now." Even more caution must be used in applying what Sri Aurobindo wrote in 1906-1910 to contemporary problems.
