This anthology of poems provides a panoramic view of the sphere of Assamese poetry spreading over the last one hundred years. Several generations of poets are accommodated in it. Besides presenting an assortment of widely varied poetic temperaments, it also contains indications of significant socio-historical changes as well as the resultant shifts and recasting of poetic ideals. During this ongoing process poetic ideals did undergo radical changes at certain stages. This happened mainly because of the rapid transformations of the intellectual milieu of the last six decades of twentieth century. The kindred affinities that bind this big collection of hetero-geneous poets together are their love for Assam and their ardour for the Assamese language.
One hundred years of Assamese Poetry is a translated version of the original Assamese book 'Esha Bacharar Asomiya Kabita' edited by Shri Homen Borgohain. This anthology covers a selective collection of poems written in Assamese during a span of hundred years. In this collection all the leading poets have been included with some of their best contribution.
All the poems of this anthology, except two, were translated by Shri Pradip Acharjya,. Dr. Hiren Gohain and Smti. Rupanjali Barua translated poems of Shri Anubhab Tulashi and Shri Nilim Kumar respectively. In his editorial note Shri Hirendra Nath Dutta has discussed at length about Assamese poets and poetry. We are indeed grateful to all who are involved in preparation of this collection.
We hope our esteemed readers will be very much benefitted by this book.
