The book opens up to a story of a 13-year-old girl, Nandanii, who was born into an affluent, zamindar family breaking the flow of a perpetual trend they had been maintaining for the past 10 generations. It was fated for the family to have the first born a male, who happened to be the only son and the only heir to the power, influence, fortune and legacy the family held. Here as the 11th generation there is an arrival of a baby girl child who happens to be the only child even 13yrs after her birth. The concerns, gossips of the society and an anticipation for a son follows along all these years by the family.
Nandanii, spends her childhood with her grandparents at her hometown, the period in her life she considers still the best. Now, after a lapse of 8 YEARS, living all along the time in Delhi with her parents, she gets a chance to go back to her native to attend a wedding and relive all her childhood memories.
What circumstances keep her away from her native all these 8 years? What does she get to face being born a girl and happens to be a single child to her parents even a decade later than her birth? Should daughters be considered worthy enough to inherit her family's fortune and legacy? To what points people can fall for money and fortune? What taunts she has to come across for belonging to the gender ruthlessly suppressed in the society for centuries, ironically, by the ones born out of her?
The book raises a question on the present society, its mentality and the age old theories and primitive practises.
