It is necessary that we, the people of India, know about the political system under which we live and are governed. In a democracy, citizens have to be wide awake and aware of their liberties, rights and responsibilities. Ultimately, the success of our political system will depend largely on our willingness to understand the system and become active participants in the democratic process.
Initially, an infructuous search for a handy book on India's political system propelled me to undertake this project. It was, however, the interest evinced by the National Book Trust, India, that proved decisive and ensured its completion on a high priority basis.
The book endeavours to present an introduction to Indian polity in an easily readable and digestible form. The treatment here is objective, simple and short and yet comprehensive. The effort is to fill a void and a felt need by describing various facets of our political system in a language that is non-technical and free from much of the jargons of the political science. The book is for all citizens and students of all ages and in all disciplines.
Two of my earlier titles, namely Our Constitution and Our Parliament published by the National Book Trust, India, under their India - the Land and the People series were well received and have gone into several editions and many reprints in different languages. This has been very encouraging and satisfying.
