The object of this project is to prepare a classified index of the im portant Sanskrit poems to search citations cited in other sources of Classical Sanskrit Poems, works of Poetics, works of grammar, lexicographic works or their commentators or other works written in Sanskrit.

The need to con solidate the poems whose utility with regards to cita tion, popularity, poetry, tendencies and limitations etc. is well established was felt which has resulted in this compilation.

In its final shape, this work is a collection of the verse which are lost and preserved at one or the other place either in an anthology or an imitative poem. It's compilation of about 1050 poems.

Born in 1942 at Nankana Sahib (Now Pakistan), Prof. Narang was educated in India particularly at University of Delhi. He passed his M.A. Sanskrit 1963 with record marks. He worked for his Ph.D. on the topic: 'A Study of Sastra-kavyas in Sanskrit Literature.' He did his LL.B. from University of Delhi in 1976. He wrote about 175 papers and published about 125 on various fields of literature particularly Kälidäsa, Vedic and Sanskrit Linguistics and grammar, lexicograthy, Law in ancient India, Jainism and poetics. The object of this project is to prepare a classified index of the important Sanskrit poems to search citations cited in other sources of Classical Sanskrit Poems, works of Poetics, works of grammar, lexicographic works or their commentators or other works written in Sanskrit. Long back Indische sprüche was prepared by Otto Böhtlingk where a selected works and a few anthologies were taken with special reference to 'Sprüche that has become obsolete and limited in scope. Fritze's Indische Sprüche is also referred to which is less seen in Indian libraries and was not available to me. Bhatvadekar's Foreword to the collection of maxims is also less known.

Recent magnum opus on Indian Sayings (Subhäşitas), their collection, translation and variants in various sources; impact on saying of countries other than India is that of Ludwik Sternbach's Subhaṣita.
