With the blessing of goddess Saraswati, my Guru and beloved parents; I could be able to continue the updating my book on Padartha Vijnana a subject 'Fundamental principles of Ayurveda' and today; I am very much delighted to put forward third edition of my book "Padartha Vijnana and Ayurveda Itihasa" at the lotus feet of lord Dhanvantari. On this glorious day; I want to share my sincere gratitude to all my preceptors and students for showering their love on me through sharing their valuable suggestions with me to make this book more palatable for students and practice oriented for clinicians and other learners of Ayurevda.
Since my graduation; I was in search a book on Padartha Vijnana through which I could be able to understand the clinical aspect of the fundamental principles of Ayurveda which are taken from various Darsanas and included in the syllabus of Padartha Vijnana. Vaidya Ranjitaraya Desai's 'Ayurvediya Padartha Vijnana' helped me a lot to expand my knowledge but it was demand from student fraternity for a long period to highlight the clinical applicability of this subject. Hence; sincere efforts have been done by the author to share the newer clinical examples in place of Darsnika examples etc as per the need of time.
Your valuable suggestions and views would help me to make this book more reliable and authentic in service to learners of Ayurveda.
Padartha Vijnana is an important subject of B.A.M.S. first year course. This is one among the most difficult subjects of the entire syllabus of B.A.M.S. More than one reasons can be enlisted for this difficulty. The, first is that Padartha Vijnana is a subject with the background of philosophy and philosophy demands a high level of thinking ability. Explaining and understanding philosophy is not an easy matter for an average person. Secondly this subject has been placed in the first year and the first year students who have studied subjects like physics, chemistry etc. during their school life, are somewhat familiar with fundamental principles of those subjects but are totally ignorant of ancient Indian philosophical subjects. Also they are in teen age, still in the stage of physical and psychological development. Philosophical subjects need mature and deep thought process which is yet to be developed at this age. One more reason is that while getting admission in the B.A.M.S. course, the student has the idea in his mind that he is getting admission in a medical faculty. Other subjects of first year like anatomy, physiology he can see glimpses of medical science, but there is no such thing he can find in Padartha Vijnana. An average student always get confused that why this subject is being taught to them ? And naturally the lack of a clear objective does not generate interest in the subject.
For all these reasons, Padartha Vijnana becomes a dull and difficult subject for students, it is a challenging task for the teachers of this subject to teach and generate interest in it. Unfortunately, very few teachers are taking up the challenge. Most teachers teach this in a traditional way, making no effort to make the subject interesting. The same is scenario in case of available bookg or literature of the subject. Same old method, same old examples and references are being followed by almost all the authors. Although in some new books, young authors have tried to make the subject attractive by introducing graphical presentations with tables instead of descriptive text which is an appreciable effort, but the main purpose behind doing so is to make the subject easily memorable which again aimed to pass the exam with ease. Very few efforts have been made towards real understanding of the subject and to explain its significance forAyurveda students.
I feel that this book is a step in the above said direction. I know its author Vaidya Kishor Satani since his student days. Luckily I have also had the fortune to be a teacher of Vaidya Kishor for a while, and he is one of the few students I have ever met. I am aware of his commitment and dedication to the education in general and Padartha Vijnana in particular. He has a great respect and deep love for the original texts of Ayurveda and is constantly striving to make them easy to understand for students. The fraternity of Ayurveda education recognizes him as one of the best teachers of Padartha Vijnana of Gujarat. He has maintained in this book both the purpose of generating interest in the subject as well as preparing the student for the examination.
There are many special features of the present book. One of the important feature that I liked is the'new clinical examples'. What I have said before is that the same old philosophical examples are found in most of the books. Vaidya Kishor has made a conscious effort to overcome that deficiency. There are two benefits to using new and clinical examples. On the one hand the student finds well known and interesting examples and on the other hand the importance and purpose of the subject automa6tically becomes clear in the mind of the student. The author deserves congratulations for taking this wonderful step.
The book is rich with pictures, charts, tables and the whole book has become eye-catching. This is a very important aspect that is missed in many publications of Ayurveda. If the student likes the book at first sight, then he reads further and then his essence comes to light, so it is very important that the general appearance of the book should be attractive. This book also passes the test in that way. Congratulations to both the author and the publisher for this.
In order to make the book useful for the examination, the question papers of previous years have also been given in the book as well as about 200 MCQs have also been given. In addition to the clear presentation of the subject by charts, pictures and tables, this type of material (question papers and MCQs) makes it valuable in terms of examination.
The author informed me that he has decided to update the book every three years so that its usefulness remains constant. I really like this view of the author. This concept is almost nowhere in Ayurveda books. Books are being reprinted but not necessarily updated over time. I would be very happy if the author succeeds in this resolution.
Finally, I heartily congratulate and bless Vaidya Kishor Satani for giving such a beautiful book on a difficult and challenging subject like Padartha Vijnana and I would also like to express my expectation from him for equally useful books on other subjects related to the department.
