About The Book

A healthy and sound politics is the life belt of a democratic country and it makes democracy functional and viable. A vibrant and conscious society may also be considered as the source of clean politics. Elections are free, fair and peaceful only when voters can exercise their franchise freely and without fear. At large, Mizoram politics is peculiar while comparing to other parts of the country. Over the years, elections in Mizoram have been, by and large, incident-free, low-key, free, fair and peaceful. It was possible only because of the unwavering cooperation and unflinching support received from different sections of the society like political parties, church bodies, civil society organizations, student community and the general public during election time. This greatly strengthened the election machinery and also makes the implementation of Model Code of Conduct easier and the election scene in the State totally different from other parts of the country where elections are mostly in servitude. For which, Mizoram is often described as a "role-model-State" in the north- east in particular and in the country in general. The Election Observers often said that "Mizoram elections are the freest and fair, peaceful and clean elections held in any part of the country. It should be copied by other states". The present volume is a modest attempt of the author in understanding the sequences of political scenario/ development in Mizoram. The book will be a very useful document. One will understand the political scenario that has been prevailed in the State by reading it.

Preface

The present volume on "Political Scenario of Mizoram: Past and Present" is an original and comprehensive work of the Author on the political process of Mizoram. The book is the product of his long experience as political science teacher in Government Mamit College as well as his understanding of Mizo politics. The work covers the entire political process in the State during 1952-2013. So the book is a venture of the author which studies the Mizo politics at large.

The literature so far available on the politics in Mizoram is inadequate and not comprehensive too. There is dearth of literature dealing with Mizoram politics considering the huge demand from the teaching community, students, the research scholars and the general readers at large. So far few books on the area in particular have been published. Hence, there is need for more literatures on the subject matter to supplement the inadequacy of materials on the area. This book will really serve the purpose.

The present volume contains altogether eight thematic chapters on different aspects of the politics of the present State of Mizoram. It covers a long period of political process of the state during 1952- 2013. The first chapter is concerned with Land and the People of the State of Mizoram. The second chapter confines on Assembly Elections and Formation of Governments in Mizoram: At a Glance including Bye-elections held during the period 1952-1999. The third, fourth and fifth chapters study the Fifth State Assembly Elections, the Sixth State Assembly Elections and the Seventh State Assembly Elections separately. The sixth chapter concentrates on the Trend of Electoral Politics in Mizoram: Role of Church and NGOs. The seventh chapter is on Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Elections so far held in Mizoram till date. The eighth chapter, which is also the last chapter, is on Conclusion.
